ail 604: Distance Technologies
Course Description:
Prepares students with knowledge and skills in methods of distance education, which incorporates telecommunications and computer technology to instruct students at remote locations or to serve as an adjunct to classroom instruction. The technology used includes telephony, cable television, satellite communications, videocassettes, videoconferencing, computer-mediated instruction, and/or online computer communication via the Internet.
Course Reflection:
Overall, I honestly loved this course. I am fascinated behind the development and usage of learning management systems (LMS). In this course, the major project was the development and evaluation of your very own online course using Blackboard Learn (the new LMS for The University of Alabama at the time). As you can see from my artifacts below, I have provided a screen shot of my landing page for the online introduction to sociology class that I created. I have also provided my self-evaluation of the course along with the Quality Matters rubric that accompanies it. Quality Matters is a research based evaluation system for online courses used in colleges and universities across the country (including Gadsden State). In addition to evaluating our own courses, we evaluated several of our classmates' courses as well.
This course was valuable to me for a number of reasons. First, as an instructor who currently teaches online, I think it was important for me to reflect on my teaching and course development from an academic standpoint. This will only make me a better online instructor. Furthermore, learning about the evaluation process of online courses allowed me to analyze the various components and modes of instruction that are most critical for virtual courses. Also, in my current role as assistant division chair and chair of the teaching and learning committee at Gadsden State, online course evaluation is something that I'm frequently concerned with. The material learned and discussed in this class has served to be extremely relevant and useful for me.
