In the end, like so many things, the company became large and stopped innovating. After 130 years of business, the company is on the verge of disappearing forever.

Lesson 3 - Montgomery Ward
Montgomery Ward Inc., one of the oldest names in American retailing and the originator of catalogue shopping, closed its doors after 128 years in 2001. The Chicago-based retailer, which gave American consumers their first money-back satisfaction guarantee as well as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, announced in December 2000 that it was filing for bankruptcy-court protection for the second time in three years. This bankruptcy would be filed with no thought of reorganization. When the company closed, there were 250 stores and 10 distribution centers left. When the company closed all of its stores and other facilities, approximately 32,000 jobs nationwide were eliminated.
