Colonies and culture: Discovering the society and folkways of British north America
Course Description: In this course, we will take a journey back to our nation’s earliest beginnings and explore the ways of life for the British American colonists from 1607-1775. We will examine four waves of immigration from England to the New World, including Puritans from the east of England to Massachusetts; royalist elite and large numbers of indentured servants from the south of England to Virginia; a Society of Friends from North Midlands of England and Wales to the Delaware Valley; and the Scotch-Irish from the borders of North Britain and Northern Ireland to the Appalachian backcountry. Do the folkways of these pioneering people still exist in our modern society? You will have to take this course to find out.
